A goofy notion that's been crossing my mind-
Who has dogs (or other pets) named after characters in Dead tunes? After some response to this survey, I'll post the name of my dog.

Once had a cat "Delilah" and dog "Maggie" short for Magnolia... German Shepherd named "Woody" after Woody Guthrie, his predasesor (oh, oh, are the spelling police watching?) was Arlo...

Does the new little terror have a name? Hmmm, if not might have to start a "Name the Dire cat" contest. Prize won't be anything, will however hold the "knife in the back" though...

Yup, my all black kitten has a name with the help of my two little daughters. First I tried Samson - VETO. Next i went with Stagger Lee - veto after their fit of laughter. Next up was Casey - Wrong! even tried telling them it could be KC (as in Kitty Cat) - they wouldn't hear of it. Before my next idea could issue forth from my mouth, my blonde haired cutie said "he's all black, I want to call him Spooky!! My other cutie concurred. Hence the kittens name is...... you guessed it - Spooky. Yay me

Well, animal lovers, thank you for your participation.

When we got our pup a few years back, his most noticeable features were how pointy his ears were and how stumpy the rest of him was. My wife said, "He looks like a Ratdog." The name stuck. We thought he was an unidentifiable mutt, but recently somebody told us they saw a picture of a breed that looked axactly like him. We googled "swedish vallhund," and lo, we found a picture of a whole herd of little Ratdogs.

In college I inherited a tortoise-shell calico cat from my roommates named China.

My dog's name is Marley. Not a Dead song or member of the band. But another great musician. Got him around xmas in '95 and we had been to A Christmas Carol play and named him partially after Marley's ghost and also after Bob Marley. The name has worked well and he's the best dog we've had. 3/4 Rhodesian Ridgeback and 1/4 Pointer.

No dogs, but as a junior high teacher in California I've gotten quite a sample of kids names over the years. There's a family in my district with two kids who I will be seeing in the next few years. The kids are named Rider and Cassidy. The PT Cruiser that drops them off at school has a Steal Your Face sticker in the window. Can't wait for the first parent teacher conference.

Y'know, Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson named their son Rider, and yes, reportedly, that old folk number that was the destination of China Cat Sunflower was their inspiration for it.

My dogs names...
Sampson - after Samson & Delilah
Sal Paradise & Dean Moriarty - after the Jack Kerouac & Neal Cassady characters in "On The Road"
Interetingly these names fit. Sal is laid back and just goes with the flow, while Dean is all hyper and always stirring things up. Do you think that I defined their eventual personalities by giving them these names?

Oh yeah, I also have a cat named Spud after Jerry's nickname in Old & In the Way.

dogsinapile-
I guess you'd have to be the judge of that yourself, because it's been so long since I read that book, I can't remember Sal's personality. I'm sure the names are fitting, though. I like that name Spud. Don't know about you, but I learned that little piece of Jerry trivia from the Grateful Dawg DVD.

Our dog, Ratdog, used to exercise what he thought was his God-given freedom to walk around untethered. The local animal control officer disagreed with him, though, and I feel really bad for him that I have to keep him chained in the back yard. It's like he's in jail, which is precisely where I was taken after forgetting a court appearance for being in violation of the city ordinance that says he ain't allowed to wander away from home. There's a buzzkill for ya'. What brought this to mind, though, is that name Spud. We found out that Ratdog had found at least one other household in my stepdaughter's neighborhood that welcomed him. He's pretty good-natured, generally keeps a smile on his face, and he became a frequent visitor to some folks over there whom we learned had their own name for him: Bubs. Spud just kinda sounded like Bubs to me.

Bubs. That's so weird that our little Ratdog had a whole other identity away from home. We also understand that he used to stroll into some of the bars uptown where he became a bit of regular. I was wondering why his gait was sometimes a little wobbly.

By the way, love that screen name-nothin' left to do but . . .
